On Wednesday 22nd of november, the science committee organized an incredibly creative event, giving us the opportunity to create our favorite nudibranchs out of polymer baking clay!
We all gathered at Lisa and Thije’s cozy floating house around 19:00, where we got our first glimpse of the vast array of multicolored clay bricks that we would later transform into our own personal slug companions. Tabea Showed us how to sculpt and mold the clay, and gave us some very useful tips all throughout the evening. We then proceeded to find our own inspiration either by googling or looking up different species of nudibranchs from the illustrations of the books the committee had provided.
Once that was done, it was time to cut a portion of clay and start sculpting our own little piece of mollusc art! We heated up the clay inside our hands and spent the next hours slowly realizing our vision by sculpting the slug’s body, adding colour and fine details, and finally baking the finished model inside the oven for 30-40 minutes. Everybody had a good time, and we all managed to make either one or multiple creations from the available clay, even diverging from nudibranchs to create other sea slugs, earrings, octopi or even frogs!
At the end of the evening, we all said our goodbyes and went back to our houses, but the fun didn’t stop as we shared in the Calamari group chat the locations where we decided to display our new Nudibranch friends.
